Judge Stein has been a United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York since 1995. He was graduated with an A.B. degree from Princeton University in 1967 and in 1972 he received a J.D. degree from Yale Law School, where he was a member of the Yale Law Journal. Following his graduation, he was a clerk to the Honorable Stanley H. Fuld, Chief Judge of the State of New York and Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals. Judge Stein was a founding partner of the litigation firm of Stein, Zauderer, Ellenhorn, Frischer & Sharp from 1981 to 1995. He previously served on the boards of directors of the Yale Law School Fund, Prisoner’s Legal Services of New York, and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest. He was also a member of the Governor’s Judicial Screening Committee for the First Department and was a monthly columnist for the New York Law Journal on the subject of the New York Court of Appeals for a decade. Judge Stein was a member of the U.S. Delegation to the Special Commission on the Practical Operation of the Hague Convention in 2001 and has participated in bar association human rights missions abroad. He is also a member of the American Law Institute and a member of the International Judicial Relations Committee of the Judicial Conference of the United States. He is a recipient of the Stanley H. Fuld Award of the New York State Bar Association for outstanding contributions to commercial law and litigation as well as the Edward Weinfeld Award for distinguished contributions to the administration of justice from the New York County Lawyers’ Association. Judge Stein has authored more than 900 judicial opinions and has given more than 130 lectures and presentations at a variety of professional organizations and law schools, both in the U.S. and abroad.
